Rapid City, SD – [February 29, 2024] – Katy Urban, a devoted wife, parent, experienced communicator, and community advocate, proudly declares her candidacy for the Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) Area 7 Board of Education seat. With a rich background in communications and a deep-rooted commitment to the Rapid City community, Katy aims to bring her passion for education and her diverse experiences to serve the students, families, and staff of RCAS.

With nearly a decade of experience as a television news reporter and anchor, Katy transitioned seamlessly into roles within communications for local school districts, including RCAS, Douglas School District and the Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Deeply connected to the Black Hills community, Katy attended K-12 in the RCAS district, fostering a multi-generational tie to the area. Now, as a parent of children enrolled in RCAS, Katy is eager to give back by serving on the Board of Education.

In her own words, Katy expresses her motivation: “I love the Rapid City Area School District, which has been an integral part of my life for nearly four decades. My aspiration is to actively contribute to RCAS, a system that positively impacts the lives of numerous individuals in a community I care deeply about.”

As a candidate, Katy prioritizes effective communication, community engagement, and advocating for the needs of students and teachers. She aims to address critical issues such as staff recruitment and retention, addressing school facilities needs, and fostering a supportive learning environment for all students.

With her extensive background as a former member of the RCAS Senior Leadership Team, a parent, and a lifelong participant in RCAS, Katy is poised to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the district and community she calls home.
